About RAAM
RAAM is the research-driven division of Baumgartner Architecture, dedicated to advancing material innovation, digital technologies, and emerging fabrication methods. Led by Principal Herwig Baumgartner, who also serves as Head of Design Technologies and Applied Studies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), RAAM bridges experimental research with real-world architectural practice. At SCI-Arc, Herwig pioneered robotic 3D-printed, fire-resilient ceramic shelters that enhance community resilience to wildfires while opening new directions in construction. He also developed robotically fabricated ceramic building envelopes that integrate photovoltaic and bio-reactive systems—solutions that generate energy, reduce environmental impact, and redefine sustainable design.
This synergistic connection between research, education, and practice has produced significant innovations in design technologies and has influenced tens of thousands of students and professionals worldwide.
