Foundations and Futures Exhibition

Baumgartner+Uriu have been invited to participate in the City of Columbus Indiana’s Inaugural Symposium “Foundations and Futures” taking place between September 29th and October 2nd 2016. “Foundations and Futures”, the inaugural symposium for Exhibit Columbus is the kick-off event for a biennial exploration of architecture, art, design, and community. Exhibit Columbus will feature site-responsive installations in critical dialogue with the design heritage of Columbus, Indiana and programs for the community, visitors, designers, families, and students. Baumgartner+Uriu have been chosen as one of Ten designers — architects, artists, landscape architects, and furniture designers —to compete for the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize, an opportunity to create one of the Prize-Winning Installations in the late summer of 2017. At the core of Exhibit Columbus are five “Prize-Winning Installations,” each built in response to one of five iconic buildings along Fifth Street: First Christian Church (1942) by Saarinen and Saarinen, Irwin Conference Center (1954) by Eero Saarinen and Associates, Bartholomew County Public Library (1969) by I.M. Pei and Partners, Cummins Corporate Office Building (1984) by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo Associates, Mill Race Park (1992) by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with architecture by Stanley Saitowitz. Each Design will serve as a discussant in the symposium, and participate in a corresponding exhibition at the Indiana University Center for Art+Design in Columbus. As the inaugural symposium for Exhibit Columbus, “Foundations and Futures” will begin to re-establish a pathway to a global conversation about design in Columbus and re-energize the community to create new designs that continue to make Columbus a great place to work and live. Exhibit Columbus is an exhibition hosted on by the city of Columbus Indiana in association with Ball State University, The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Kentucky, University of Michigan, the Indiana University Center for Art+Design, and Columbus-Ivy Tech.
